I visited Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria, with a friend I met in Romania while doing Erasmus.
It was winter time, very cold outside and there was a lot of snow. This city has a peculiarity... it's full of graffiti everywhere! Throughout this page you will understand what I'm talking about...
Probably the worst Train I've ever been on
TARGU JIU, ROMANIA | SOFIA, BULGARIA
Trains in Eastern Europe are very old and slow and that's what makes the journey so different and so special.
I'm addicted to train travel... and this train from Romania to Sofia, Bulgaria, was special because it had probably the worst conditions I have ever seen in European trains.
First, the train was fucking cold inside. Second, the seats were in very bad shape and were dirty because of long term use... and third, the main doors of the carriages were constantly opening and snow was getting into the train...
Inside the train we met a young Chinese solo traveler and we started talking with him.
He was doing an internship in Amsterdam and he was saying that people there only know how to have fun with alcohol and drugs... and he didn't like it.
So we asked him how he usually hasfun and he answered- "My friends and I, we go to a restaurant to have dinner and then we sing karaoke and play board games".
In the image below there is a bottle of red wine, mine and my friend's, and the boy's milk pack next to it.
Two completely different worlds
This Pubcrawl was dope! 🙌
SOFIA, BULGARIA
Pub Crawls are perfect to meet people and to find local places to have fun. A good Pub Crawl is the one that brings you to interesting local bars far away from the tourism business. And this one was exactly what I look for when I join a Pub Crawl.
Through this Pub Crawl in Sofia (www.thenewsofiapubcrawl.com) we discovered some peculiar places like a secret underground bar - "Candle's bar".
There are rumors that during the Communist era, this bar was one of the meeting points for people to speak freely during Bulgaria’s 33 years of communist rule.
This is the entrance to the bar:
Inside "Candle's bar" the light comes from candles that are everywhere like on the ground, stairs and tables... This place it's NOT a tourist place. Here you will find a mixture of students who have heard about the place, and trendy locals.
Take a look at how it looks inside:
Another interesting bar was "The Apartment bar". The Apartment is literally an apartment... It’s a bar in an apartment.
There aren't any signs to indicate the entrance and it seems like a normal building.
This place has a laid-back atmosphere and is full of art all around. If you want to buy food or drink... go to the kitchen!
We also went to a bar inside a hostel... and once more this is a unique place full of graffiti on the walls...
Probably, until now, this was the pubcrawl where I experienced the most exclusive places, far from the tourism environment...

SOFIA, BULGARIA
A peculiar thing I found in Sofia was the graffiti that is almost everywhere... especially in street electricity boxes.
